For a couple of days, the problem didn't happen.
Since then, I rolled back to Yosemite to see if El Capitan was the issue. They weren't able to reach any conclusions. The first occurrence took place as I connected to wifi in the store.įrom there, the staff did plenty of testing in front of me, trying to see if there was a graphics or wifi error. So a few days later, I brought it back to the Apple store, and the screen blackout happened twice in the store. Having backed up everything that I needed, that was fine with me, but the problem came right back once I started using it again. Everything came back clean, and they suggested doing a complete wipe of the hard drive and a fresh installation of OS X. Several weeks later, I finally brought it to my Apple store, where it stayed for a few days of testing. The various resets didn't have any effect on the issue. Next up was an in-place reinstallation of OS X. Apple's phone support had me try creating a new user profile, which didn't work. If there was a suggested solution, either on these forums or elsewhere, I tried it. There wasn't any identifiable trend in software use.
Sometimes it happened when the MacBook was idle, sometimes it happened when it under a heavy workload. The cursor would get stuck, and the display dimmed briefly before going completely black for two or three seconds at a time. It would randomly have fits of display flickering.
